Former Brentford and Tottenham Analyst Joe Newton has been appointed as First Team Analyst at Sunderland.
Newton, who was our guest on the latest Episode of the TGG Podcast, has been without a club since leaving Spurs with Thomas Frank in February.
He spent six years as a First Team Analyst at Brentford before following Frank from west to north London last summer and taking on the new role of Coach-Analyst at Spurs.
“I am naturally excited to get back into it,” Netwon told TGG. “The job advert came up towards the end of last season and I applied. The club had a great season last year and hopefully that continues.
“It has a great community feel and good values and that is one of the things that attracted me to the role.”
Newton’s work at Sunderland will be slightly different to his roles at Brentford and Spurs.
With the Bees, his job was to focus on post-match analysis and present his findings to Frank and the rest of the coaching staff during matches and also on the Monday morning straight after games.
At Spurs, his role changed in certain ways after the transition to Coach-Analyst. While the bulk of it stayed the same, he became more of a conduit between the coaches and analysts.
“I was based with the coaches – I was in coaches’ meetings, I was on the grass for every session basically,” he told the TGG Podcast.
At the Stadium of Light, he will be focusing more on the opposition rather than delivering post-match analysis.
His experience of analysing European opponents at Spurs will also be useful, with Sunderland competing in the Europa League next season.
Joe Newton will be presenting at TGG Live 2026 at Old Trafford in September. To find out more and to buy tickets, click below.
‘Highest level’
Newton’s time in football started as a youngster in Tranmere’s Academy before, aged 18, he moved to Wrexham where he became a professional player while also doing a degree at the town’s university.
In 2019, he joined Brentford and, while he admits he likes to stay under the radar, that changed when he was featured on a Sky programme about Thomas Frank’s working day at the club.
It highlighted the detail which goes into Newton’s work and he said: “The piece was quite eye-opening for a few people, it was good.”
Looking to the future, Newton said he wanted to stay in analysis “at the highest level that I can” and also “keep developing myself” and has ambitions to possibly become a Sporting Director one day “further down the line”.
Newton will be one of the speakers at TGG Live 2026 at Old Trafford in September, talking about his career so far.
