Short brothers leave Oxford after combined 12 years

Chris first arrived in November 2018 as Head of Sports Science, left in May 2021 for a spell at Middlesbrough, and returned to the club in September 2022.

“Craig was a vital member of the team, providing calmness and continuity, working tirelessly alongside five permanent managers,” Oxford said in a statement.

“Chris was an important part of the backroom team, helping shape the physical condition and wellbeing of the squad through a hugely significant chapter for the club.

“Everyone at Oxford United would like to thank Craig and Chris for their years of dedication and professionalism. They depart with our sincerest gratitude and our very best wishes for whatever comes next.”

The brothers were at Oxford for the club’s rise from League One to the Championship and back again. Craig’s three caretaker spells came in February and November 2023 and in December 2025.

The brothers were both defenders and played together at Scarborough and Notts County.

Craig, 58, moved from Notts County to Derby County for £2.5m in 1992 and went on to play for Everton, Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield United and Ferencváros. He managed Ferencváros and then Notts County, and coached at Derby and Blackburn before joining Oxford.

Chris, 56, played for Scarborough, Notts County, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United and Stoke City. His playing career ended in 1998, a month after joining Stoke, when he collapsed at Craven Cottage and was revived with oxygen. Tests later identified a circulation disorder.

He subsequently moved into fitness and conditioning, working at Blackburn, Crystal Palace, Derby, Leicester City, Sheffield United, Leeds United, Bradford City and Blackpool before his first spell at Oxford.

Manager Matt Bloomfield was sacked by Oxford on 20th June and replaced three days later by former Arsenal and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey.
