Pitch to the Pros: Your chance to get feedback from industry experts

The four finalists have been announced for Pitch to the Pros – the contest that sees Analytics Members present their ideas to a panel of industry experts.

We launched Pitch to the Pros last month, inviting Members to send their ideas on how to provide insight into the game using data, and received lots of excellent entries.

After some considerable deliberation, Professor David Sumpter and his panel whittled them down to a shortlist of four, who will present their ideas tonight at 7pm UK time (8pm CET):

  • Press Resistance in Context: Assessing Stability and Transferability Across Leagues
    Kele János
  • Improving Goalkeeper Analysis: The xT-GK Metric ~ Jeffrey Eyestone
  • The quickest passers of the ball ~ Abhishek Vasu
  • Disruption Index: Measuring the Moments That Break Structure ~ Kevin Kang

Our panel is:

  • Professor David Sumpter: World-renowned mathematician and co-founder of Twelve.
  • Pegah Rahimian: Analytics Researcher with Upssala University and Data Scientist with Twelve.
  • David Laszlo: Analyst with the Hungarian Football Association. 
  • Rodrigo Salvador: Data co-ordinator with Red Bull Bragantino in Brazil. 

All Analytics Members are invited to watch the presentations and the Zoom details have been posted in the Slack channel.

The idea of Pitch to the Pros was for Analytics Members to get feedback on their work and tips on how to make it useful for clubs. The winning entry will be published on TGG.

The process was as follows:

  1. Send in a short (200 word) description of your work. It could be a new metric for pressing, a study on the benefit of playing out from the back or a novel goalkeeper metric – anything that uses data to give insight into the game. 
  2. We put together a shortlist to prepare a 5-10 minute presentation.
  3. 26th of May: The final! Chance to present your work and get feedback from our panel, consisting of Professor David Sumpter and other industry experts.
  4. The best presentation (as decided by the panel) will have a write up on the TGG website.

Dom Jordan, the Chief Data Officer at Twelve and former Director of Data at Manchester United, said: “This is the best way to build a portfolio and de-risk your approaches to clubs – tangible evidence that you can deliver versus words on paper that you might be able to deliver.”
