Mayer joins England as Tuchel confirms new-look backroom team

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed his new-look England staff, with Performance Coach Nicolas Mayer joining Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilário and James Melbourne on the sidelines.

Tuchel, 51, officially started his role as England Head Coach yesterday (January 1st), having been announced in the role in October. 

As TGG reported in November, Barry, who worked with the German at both Chelsea and Bayern Munich, will again be his Assistant, with Hilario as Goalkeeper Coach and Melbourne as Lead Analyst. 

Now Frenchman Mayer, 42, has also been named on Tuchel’s staff. He worked alongside the German at PSG and Bayern Munich and is originally from Strasbourg. 

Lee Carsley, who was Head Coach on an interim basis across the Autumn internationals, has now returned to his full-time role with the Under-21s ahead of this summer’s U21 European Championship in Slovakia, along with Assistants Ashley Cole and Joleon Lescott.

Tuchel and his support staff are preparing for England’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign and will watch Tottenham v Newcastle on Saturday. The Three Lions’ start 2025 with qualifiers against Albania and Latvia on March 21st and 24th.
