Woody Dewar, who was First Team Coach-Analyst at Wolves under Gary O’Neil, has been appointed as Chelsea’s new Head of Performance Analysis.

He replaces James Melbourne, who held the role for almost 20 years before joining Thomas Tuchel’s England staff last November.

Chelsea advertised the role on TGG at the end of last year and specified someone who could “lead on the performance analysis process, providing in-depth analysis and insight on matches and players that can influence coaching and drive high performance.”

Dewar worked for Crystal Palace, Manchester City and Tottenham at Academy level before becoming Lead First Team Analyst and Scouting Co-Ordinator at Watford from 2021 to 2023. The UEFA A Licence coach then joined O’Neil at Wolves as First Team Coach-Analyst in September 2023, lasting 15 months until the Head Coach was fired in December last year.

At Chelsea, Dewar will report into co-Sporting Directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, both of whom have a background in Performance Analysis. Stewart was an Analyst with Hull City, England and Manchester City before moving into senior recruitment roles, while Winstanley was Performance Analysis Manager at Wigan and Head of Analysis at Derby County at the start of his career.
