Stoke City have appointed Arsenal Under-21s Head Coach Max Porter as an Assistant Manager to Mark Robins.

Porter had been in his role for the past season but originally joined the Gunners in 2017 and worked his way through the age groups in their Academy.

Porter joins fellow Assistant Manager James Rowberry, First Team Coach Ryan Shawcross and Goalkeeper Coach Darren Behcet in Robins’ first team backroom staff.

Sporting Director Jonathan Walters said: “Max arrives from one of the most elite and successful environments in the country. He has built a reputation as one of the brightest young coaches in the game and has played an important role in the development of a number of exceptional young players during his time at Arsenal.

“What stood out to us was Max’s drive, energy and ambition. He is constantly looking to improve, challenge and develop those around him and we believe he will be a tremendous addition to our environment.

“As we continue to strengthen and add quality to our backroom staff, Max is another important appointment for the club, and we’re excited to see the impact he can make as we prepare for the season ahead.”

Porter is the second off-field close-season arrival at Stoke, following Stuart Harvey’s appointment as Technical Director in May.

He joined Arsenal as Under-9s Coach and was Head Coach for many of the club’s age groups, including Under-13s, Under-17s and Under-19s, as well as being Professional Development Youth Lead Coach, working with players such as Myles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dowman.

Porter was also Under-21s Assistant Coach before taking over the team last August after the previous U21s Head Coach Mehmet Ali moved to Brentford.

At the time, Arsenal Academy Manager Per Mertesacker said: “Max has got the qualities needed to be a successful leader and coach. The environment he creates for staff and young players is always one of high challenge and ultimate care.”

Stoke have spent the past eight seasons in the Championship, finishing in the bottom half of the table each year, following a 10-year stay in the Premier League.
