Cara Lea Moseley has left Brighton after four years as the club review their psychology and wellbeing provision.

The former Wales netball international joined the Seagulls in April 2020 as Mental Wellbeing Manager and then took on the title of Psychology and Wellbeing Manager two years later.

She left Brighton at the end of last season and has now been appointed Women’s Psychosocial Pathway Manager for the Football Association, beginning her role at the end of this month.

Writing on LinkedIn, Moseley said: “It’s a really exciting role and I’m very much looking forward to work alongside some very talented staff and young people.”

Former Brighton Technical Director Dan Ashworth set up the pioneering Performance Psychology and Wellbeing department in 2020. Changing Minds UK were contracted to provide wellbeing and psychology support at the club, with their co-founder James Bell becoming Head of Psychology and Wellbeing.

Bell had previously worked with UK Sport, the RFU, ECB and the Cleveland Browns in the NFL. In addition, a number of sports psychologists from Changing Minds were also brought in to work across the club.

That contract ended at the end of the 2021/22 season, after Ashworth left for Newcastle United, with Bell and the rest of the Changing Minds psychologists ceasing to be involved with the club.

Sarah Murray, who was Women's Senior Performance Psychologist for Brighton to January 2022, gave insights into the Psychology and Wellbeing department at TGG’s Future Game Webinar in August 2020.

She said: “Traditionally, in football and in other sports, we’ve been keen to have the wellbeing space over here and the performance space in another corner. At the club, we are in a very unique and privileged position of having a really exciting restructure within our performance psychology and wellbeing team.

“They are now within one department across the whole club, across every team. We have a Mental Wellbeing Manager (Moseley) who sits across the whole club and is within the performance psychology and wellbeing team.

“Dan Ashworth has been an absolute catalyst for the promotion of performance psychology and mental wellbeing and - most importantly of all - of having them in the same space, because they are inextricably linked.

“With that in mind, the department has expanded considerably, and would now take into account a large range of expertise, from performance psychologists to clinical psychologist support to mental wellbeing. It creates this space for each individual whereby there will be the support required to get the very best from them.”

The club currently employ a Clinical Psychologist, as well as Louise Burn as a Psychologist for the Women's and Girls' teams, and Aodhagan Conlon with the Academy. Technical Director David Weir, Head Coach Fabian Hurzeler and Head of Performance Gary Walker will have an input on psychology and wellbeing provision and deciding whether further additions need to be made.
