JAMES CHEESEMAN has been promoted to First Team Director of Performance by Manchester City.

For the last 19 months Cheeseman has been Head of Performance Services for Manchester City Women. He arrived at the club in January 2022 from West Ham, where he was Head of Academy Physical Development, and has also worked for the English Institute of Sport and GB Pentathlon.

Simon Timson is the overall strategic performance lead across City Football Group (his title is Performance Director) and Dan Lewindon also works across the group as Director of Player Health and Performance.

Cheeseman’s role will be specifically with Pep Guardiola’s men’s first team at Manchester City. As TGG has reported, City face a summer rebuild behind the scenes, with staff including Jason Wilcox (Academy Director), Paul Midgley (Northern UK Scouting Manager), Enzo Maresca and Rodolfo Borrell (both Assistants) having departed. Head of Human Performance Sam Erith also left City Football Group last October after 11 years.

There has been an eagerness to promote from within at City, as evidenced by Cheeseman’s elevation to Director of Performance.

In his annual review earlier this summer, City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said: "People appreciate that we are producing not just the best talent on the pitch, not just the best talent in the Academy, not just the best talent in the group… but some of the best sporting staff in the world.

“That’s a testament to the great work that this group is doing. We’re the number one football brand in the world.”
