Sporting Director Dougie Freedman is leaving Crystal Palace after seven-and-a-half years to join Saudi Second Division side Al-Diriyah.

The Scot, who made 330 league appearances during two spells as a Palace player and was their manager from January 2011 to October 2012, became the club’s Sporting Director in August 2017.

Dougie has been instrumental in everything we have done over the past eight years.

During that time they remained in the Premier League throughout and Freedman became one of the most respected Sporting Directors in England, leading to links with clubs including Manchester United and Newcastle United.

His stint made him the fifth longest-serving Sporting Director (or equivalent) in the Premier League, after Txiki Begiristain (Manchester City), Jon Rudkin (Leicester City), Phil Giles (Brentford) and Tony Khan (Fulham).

In his role, Freedman “worked across all areas of football operations, talent ID, player recruitment and retention for both the first-team and Academy,” Palace explained.

He was also “a valued member and contributor of the Senior Leadership Group.”

Chairman Steve Parish said: “Dougie has been instrumental in everything we have done over the past eight years and indeed had a huge impact before that as manager and, of course, as a player.

I truly believe the foundations are in place to be built upon.

“I have enjoyed working with him immensely and wish him every success for the future. Dougie leaves behind an excellent and well-structured sporting department that I’m sure will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Freedman added: “I would like to extend my thanks to Steve Parish, the other owners and to all the staff, managers and players who have been at the club during my time here. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning from and working alongside you all.

“It’s been an honour to represent the club and I am incredibly proud of the work that’s been done, with the Chairman’s support, in growing the football club into its current position.

“To be leaving the club with a squad full of exciting talent led by an excellent manager, I truly believe the foundations are in place to be built upon.

“Finally, a huge thank you to all the fans for your continued support and passion – especially with how you’ve helped new signings and Academy products settle into life at Selhurst Park by supporting and getting behind the team.

“Crystal Palace is and will always remain in my heart, and I will continue to look for results and follow the club’s progress closely.”

Palace have an Assistant Sporting Director in Ben Stevens, who has been with the club for more than a decade. He was promoted from Head of Recruitment and Performance Analysis to his current role in July 2024.

Diriyah have just been promoted to the Saudi second tier. They have a 15,000 stadium and are located on the outskirts of Riyadh.

“Diriyah is the original home of the Saudi royal family and will be a big part of the 2034 World Cup,” said Saudi football expert Ben Jacobs.
