Norwich City have appointed Bryan Klug – the former long-serving Head of Coaching at rivals Ipswich – as their Head of Coach Development.
Klug spent almost 50 years at Portman Road on the playing and coaching side. He came through Ipswich’s youth system, although never made a senior appearance, and later headed up the club’s new Academy when it opened in 1998.
During a spell at Tottenham Hotspur from 2010 to 2012, he worked with current Canaries Academy Manager Dean Rastrick.
Klug replaces Head of Coaching Tom Hart, who left Carrow Road at the end of 2024 and is now Under-16 Head Coach/Under-15/16 Cell Lead at Tottenham Hotspur. His job title has been changed from Hart’s traditional one to reflect a focus on methodology.
Norwich have a Category One Academy and were 19th in our Academy Productivity Rankings for last season.
Klug was around the Ipswich squad when Sir Bobby Robson was manager in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He went on to play for Wimbledon, on loan, Chesterfield and Peterborough United before finishing his career in non-league football.
After hanging up his boots, he returned to Ipswich in 1987 and worked in several youth coaching roles until he was put in charge of the club’s new Academy in 1998.
Success in developing players
He played a key role in the development of players such as Richard Wright, Kieron Dyer, James Scowcroft, Richard Naylor, Titus Bramble and Darren Bent and during his Academy leadership, the club’s Under-18s won the FA Youth Cup in 2005.
Klug also worked as Assistant Manager to Jim Magilton in 2006 and was the club’s Caretaker Manager on three separate occasions.
After a brief spell with Spurs, he returned to Portman Road once again and in 2016 moved into a Head of Coaching and Player Development role.
