Simon Wilson has been appointed to the new role of Sporting Director by Sheffield Wednesday as the club enter a new era.
Wilson joins from Stockport County, where he spent six transformative years – first as Director of Football and latterly Chief Executive – helping drive the club from the National League to the brink of the Championship.
Simon Wilson will be speaking at TGG Live 2026 at Old Trafford on September 29th. To find out more our industry-leading event and to buy tickets, click below.
US businessman David Storch completed his takeover of Wednesday in early May. His Arise Capital Partners consortium has brought fresh hope to the south Yorkshire club after a turbulent decade under previous owner Dejphon Chansiri.
The Owls had been in administration since October, suffered multiple points deductions and were relegated to League One, though a further 15-point penalty that would have carried into the new season was subsequently waived by the EFL on completion of the takeover.
Wilson’s appointment is the second significant off-field hire of the new regime, following the recent arrival of Chief Executive David Bruce from Sunderland.
It also marks the first time the club has had a dedicated Sporting Director – a role never utilised during Chansiri’s reign.
Wilson appeared on Episode #70 of the TGG Podcast last August, discussing how he drove success with strategy at both Manchester City and Stockport, and will be appearing on the Sporting Director panel at TGG Live 2026 in Manchester on September 29 & 30.
Wednesday described the creation of the role as a significant step that reflects the clear strategic vision of the club’s ownership, both for the immediate future and the long term. Wilson will sit at the heart of the club’s football structure, leading its sporting strategy and helping build the foundations required for sustainable long-term success.
Wilson on his appointment
Wilson said: “Sheffield Wednesday are one of the most historic clubs in English football, with a unique identity, a passionate supporter base and a matchday atmosphere that immediately stands out.
“The energy of Hillsborough and the passion of our supporters are powerful strengths, and I strongly believe successful football clubs understand their advantages and build around them. That energy and identity should be reflected in every part of our club – particularly in the team we build, how we play and the culture we create.
“Success will require patience, consistency and alignment. We are not looking for quick fixes, but to build a football operation capable of delivering sustainable success over the long term. I’m excited to get started and look forward to helping shape the next chapter of Sheffield Wednesday’s journey.”
The club’s verdict
Bruce added: “Simon’s appointment is an important moment for Sheffield Wednesday. We are building for the future, and that requires experienced, high-calibre leadership at every level of the football club.
“Simon brings a rare blend of strategic intelligence, elite football knowledge and proven operational leadership, having worked at some of the most respected organisations in world football.
“His appointment reflects our commitment to modernising the club, strengthening our football structure and building in a way that gives Wednesday the strongest possible platform for long-term success.
“We also recognise and respect the immense effort of everyone involved throughout an incredibly challenging 2025/26 season. The work ahead is not about disregarding what came before, but building on those foundations with greater ambition, clarity and alignment.”
Diverse and impressive CV
Wilson began his career as an analyst at Southampton before joining Manchester City, where he spent seven years in a number of senior strategic and performance roles. As Director of Football Services, he was ultimately responsible for setting up City Football Group’s portfolio of clubs, including Melbourne City and New York City FC.
He later joined Sunderland AFC as Chief Football Officer before undertaking consultancy work for the Premier League, Leicester City, Sparta Prague and Ajax.
Most recently, Wilson played a transformative role at Stockport County, initially as Director of Football and later as Chief Executive Officer. Together with owner Mark Stott, he built a seven-year plan to reach the Championship, oversaw three promotions, and left the club having delivered record attendances and revenues, a maturing Academy and a squad built with significant assets.
In Wilson’s final season, Stockport finished third in League One and reached the play-off final, where they were beaten 4-1 by Bolton Wanderers at Wembley, narrowly missing out on a return to the Championship for the first time since 2002.
He now joins Sheffield Wednesday at a pivotal moment, as preparations continue for the 2026/27 League One season and beyond.
