Hassard wins Pitch to the Pros 2 with Shot Prediction Analysis

Peter Hassard has won Pitch to the Pros 2 with his new modelling approach for Shot Prediction Analysis.
Pitch to the Pros was launched this year to give TGG x Twelve Analytics Members an opportunity to present ideas that give insights with data. Jeffrey Eyestone won the inaugural contest in May with a new metric to “revolutionise goalkeeper analytics”.
We received lots of interest in Pitch to the Pros 2 and whittled the entries down to four finalists:
- Tiago Monteiro: Corner threat index.
- Gael Buchy: Player passing decision quality.
- Mahmoud Nassef: Half space and middle channel analysis.
- Peter Hassard: Shot prediction analysis.
Each had 10 minutes to deliver their idea to a panel of experts, who were:
- Professor David Sumpter (Co-Founder of Twelve Football).
- David Laszlo (Analyst for the Hungarian Football Federation).
- Matteo Matteotti (Head of Data, Parma Calcio).
- Pegah Rahimian (Data Scientist, Twelve Football).
At the end of each session, the finalists got feedback on their submissions from the panel and audience members.
The panel were split on their choice of winner, reflecting the quality of the presentations, but in the end Hassard came out on top after receiving the most votes.
Panel chair Professor Sumpter said: “Peter built a very nice Streamlit app for tracking data, but more importantly he developed a new modelling approach to predicting shots at a team level, based on the shape and movement of the team.
“His work raises an intriguing question: is it possible (even with a small possibility) to predict a goal minutes before it happens?”
