Nigel Gibbs has been appointed as Men’s First Team Assistant Head Coach under new Head Coach Ryan Mason at West Bromwich Albion.
Gibbs worked as Assistant to Mason at Tottenham Hotspur, both when he was Head of Player Development and also Interim First Team Coach.
A right-back in his playing days, Gibbs made more than 400 appearances for Watford – his only club – before starting his coaching career at Vicarage Road. He then moved to Reading and later Leeds United, becoming Assistant Manager to Brian McDermott at both clubs and also having a brief spell as Caretaker Manager at Elland Road.
He also worked as First Team Coach at Millwall and Assistant Manager at Swansea City, Reading again, Cercle Brugge and Portsmouth, with three spells at Spurs in-between these other roles.
His first job with the north London club was as Under-19s Coach, his second as Assistant Head of Player Development for the Under-17 to Under-23 players and his third as Interim Head Coach.
Gibbs left Spurs in December 2024 to again become Assistant Manager at Reading, from where he has moved to The Hawthorns.
Sam Pooley has joined Gibbs and Mason at the club as Men’s First Team Coach and Head of Performance.
Pooley was at Spurs for almost 10 years – moving up from Academy Sport Scientist to First Team Sports Scientist and then in July 2021 to Head of Sports Science.
He left the club in April 2024 and was appointed Head of Performance at Rangers in January this year.
They join First Team Coach James Morrison, First Team Statistical Analyst Damia Abella and Professional Development Goalkeeper Coach Boaz Myhill, who were already at the Championship club, in the club’s backroom staff.
