Former Leicester City and Nottingham Forest Assistant Steve Rands has been appointed First Team Coach-Analyst at Borussia Dortmund.
The Englishman worked with Steve Cooper at Leicester City until the duo were sacked in November 2024. He had also worked with the Welshman at Nottingham Forest and Swansea City, as well as being Head of Analysis at Manchester City, where he served for seven years.
Rands is a pioneer of the Coach-Analyst role. In 2022, he told TGG: “That merge between the two roles (coaching and analysis) is starting to happen. It is now more common to see an analyst sat on the bench, giving instruction directly to the player instead of having to go through a coach.
“There is that pattern now, where each is crossing into the other’s domain, and it’s working.”
His link with Dortmund Head Coach Niko Kovač came through Aaron Briggs, Liverpool’s First Team Individual Development Coach. Briggs worked under Rands at Manchester City, when he was First Team Analyst, and then under Kovač at Monaco and Wolfsburg.
Writing on LinkedIn, Rands said: “Excited to share that I’ve joined Champions League and Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund! It’s an incredible opportunity to be part of a club with such a rich history, passionate fanbase, and commitment to excellence. Looking forward to contributing to the journey ahead and working alongside some of the best minds in the game.
“Let’s get to work!”
Dortmund already have an Englishman on their staff – the First Team Coach and set piece specialist Alex Clapham, who joined under former Head Coach Nuri Sahin in the summer.
