King reunited with former mentor Mawson at Man Utd

He oversaw King’s development for the whole of his playing career and was then his boss for 16 months when King became Academy Goalkeeper Coach.

Mawson is now Lead First Team Goalkeeping Coach at United, having filled the vacancy left by Jorge Vital, the Assistant Goalkeeping Coach who arrived with Ruben Amorim from Sporting in November 2024 and departed in January.

King came through Burnley’s Academy and was capped by England at Under-16 level, but his career ended through injury at 21.

He returned to Burnley as Academy Goalkeeper Coach in 2018, became Transition Goalkeeping Coach and First Team Assistant Goalkeeping Coach in July 2021, and had a two-month spell as Interim First Team Goalkeeping Coach in April and May 2022, following Sean Dyche’s departure.

In February 2024, he took on Mawson’s former role as Head of Academy Goalkeeping alongside his first-team duties, before becoming First Team Transition Goalkeeping Coach in August 2024. He has worked under managers Dyche, Vincent Kompany and Scott Parker, and Kersten Kuhl remains in position as Goalkeeping Coach for the Clarets.

Mawson, who was part of two promotion-winning Burnley staffs, joined United as Assistant Goalkeeping Coach in December 2019 and has outlasted four Head Coaches and three senior goalkeeping coaches.

Richard Hartis left in July 2024, Jelle ten Rouwelaar arrived that summer and departed four months later when Amorim came in, and Vital followed Amorim out in January. King’s appointment is the fourth change to United’s first-team goalkeeping department in a little over two years.
