Rhys Carr, who led Coventry City with distinction following the sacking of Mark Robins last November, has left the Sky Blues by mutual consent.

The Welshman took interim charge of the Championship side against three of the top four sides in the division, Sunderland, Sheffield United and Burnley, and led them to two 2-2 draws and a defeat, respectively.

However, following the arrival of Head Coach Frank Lampard and the rest of his staff, Carr has now decided to move on. His permanent role was First-Team Coach and he is looking to pursue opportunities as an Assistant or Head Coach.

“Despite only being at the club for less time than I’d have liked, I have built such a strong connection with the place already,” Carr said. “Being asked to lead the club on an interim basis against three of the top teams in the division was an absolute honour.

“For now, I am going to spend some time with my family and I look forward to seeing what the future holds. I’d like to wish everyone at the football club all the best for the future.”

Sky Blues fans, who had been skeptical about Carr’s appointment at the start of his interim reign because of anger about Robins’ sacking, have now taken to social media to thank him for his efforts.

One, @SkyBlueStacey, wrote: “Thanks Rhys for your time with us. Can’t have been easy for you having to face an angry emotional fan base during that period but you’ve come out of it all with our support and well wishes. Good Luck with your future endeavours. Fair play to you.”

Carr is currently completing his UEFA Pro Licence and is also a qualified Sports Scientist. He has held coaching roles at both Academy and first-team level for clubs including Cardiff City, Bristol City, Sheffield United and Wolves, as well as founding the popular Soccer Science Conference.

Carr has said he is “passionate about team and player development within high-performance and results-driven environments” and presented at our 2021 Individual Development Webinar on ‘Developing the individual within the team.’
