Burton Albion have hired Richard Dorman from Finland’s SJK Seinäjoki to become their new Sporting Director.
Dorman is a former pro footballer who came through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers and played in the United States and Finland. It was there that he ended his playing career, with SJK Seinäjoki, before transitioning into the off-field role of Technical Director at the club.
SJK recently finished fourth in Finland’s top league, the Veikkausliiga, whilst having the lowest average age of any team. Burton said Dorman would be “responsible for managing the recruitment of new players and staff [and] working with the Board and Head Coach in the search for footballing success and sustainability.”
Dorman replaces Bendik Hareide, who stepped down as Sporting Director in February for family reasons. Meanwhile, Burton have also appointed Stockport County’s Tom Mahon as their new Chief Operating Officer.
The Brewers were taken over by Nordic Football Group (NFG) in June 2024. In a statement, NFG said: “As owners, we remain fully committed to our long-term ambitions for Burton Albion and will constantly evaluate every option when it comes to achieving this.
“Nothing is more important than safeguarding a self-sustaining and successful future in League One. That is the very foundation upon everything else must be built as a club, community trust and as ambassadors for the town.
“Considering the major losses made during this transitional year, we have to be shrewd with the decisions we make in the future to be able to fulfil our ultimate vision of success through self-sustainability.
“We also have to take some tough decisions going forward.”
Burton finished 20th in League One this season, avoiding relegation to the fourth tier of English football.
