Rhys Carr has remained on Coventry City’s staff following the arrival of Frank Lampard as Head Coach, but fellow First Team Coach George Boateng has departed.
Both Carr and Boateng were appointed First Team Coaches in the summer as Mark Robins reshuffled his coaching staff. Welshman Carr then took caretaker charge of the team when Robins was sacked on November 7th and impressed, as the team earned draws against high-fliers Sunderland and Sheffield United before defeat by Burnley on Tuesday night.
Individual development is becoming a huge focus in the modern game. Gone are the days when teams just took a one-size-fits-all approach. During this webinar you will get in-depth insights into how it's being done during six elite presentations.
Lampard, 46, was appointed Head Coach today on a two-and-a-half-year contract and has retained Carr. However, Boateng, has been released, and in a statement, Coventry said: “We would all like to thank George for his contribution to the Sky Blues since his return to the club in the summer.
“George was a popular figure, adding to his 57-game and seven-goal playing spell at the club during the 1990s. We all wish George the best of luck for the future.”
Lampard has brought long-time assistants Joe Edwards and Chris Jones with him to Coventry. Edwards was at Chelsea for a total of 27 years, as a young player and coach, predominantly with the Academy.
He was promoted to first-team duties under Lampard in July 2019 and remained under Thomas Tuchel, helping the club win the 2021 Champions League. Edwards left Stamford Bridge to join Lampard at Everton in 2023.
Since then he has been Head Coach of England Under-20s and Millwall.
Jones is another Chelsea stalwart, who first worked with the new Coventry Head Coach when he was a Fitness Coach and Lampard was a player. Jones went on to serve on Lampard’s staff at Derby County, Chelsea and Everton, and recently worked with Gareth Southgate’s England at Euro 2024.
Carr is a qualified Sports Scientist and is currently enrolled on his UEFA Pro Licence. He has worked at Bristol City, Sheffield United and Wolves and presented at TGG’s 2021 Individual Development Webinar.
