Former Huddersfield Town Sporting Director Leigh Bromby has been appointed Interim Recruitment Lead at Derby County for the duration of the summer transfer window.
Bromby left Huddersfield in June 2023, having spent nine years with the Terriers, as Academy Manager, Head of Football Operations and then Sporting Director. In 2022, Huddersfield reached the Championship play-off final, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at Wembley.
Bromby was sacked after new owner Kevin Nagle took over the club and replaced with former Stoke City Technical Director Mark Cartwright, who was himself dismissed two weeks ago following failure to return to the Championship after relegation in 2023/24.
At Derby, Bromby will work closely with Derby’s joint Heads of Sporting Intelligence, Ed Smith and Mo Bobat, who have been with the club since last summer, and Talent Identification Lead Mark Thomas, who joined from Oxford United in February 2023.
Bobat, the former Performance Director for England Cricket, spoke to TGG about his role in June 2024. He explained that the Sporting Intelligence department had direct oversight of four areas: Sports Science and Medicine (“the doctor, physios, conditioning coach, nutritionist, psychology, soft tissue therapists”), Data Analytics, Talent Identification (scouting) and Talent Acquisition (recruitment).
“Our job will be to organise and align the thinking in these areas and to enhance it with some really good analytics,” Bobat said.
Derby can guarantee their Championship status if they beat Stoke City at Pride Park in their final game of the season next weekend. They have secured back-to-back wins in their last two games and six victories in 10 matches under John Eustace, who was appointed Manager in February.
Since leaving Huddersfield, Bromby has set up his own recruitment and advisory firm called Bromby and Partners, along with former pro footballer Darius Henderson and ex-Norwich City Sporting Director Stuart Webber.
He appeared on Episode #3 of the TGG Podcast and spoke at our Individual Development Webinar in 2021.
