Colchester have named Tom Flanagan, who retired from playing in the summer, as their new Head of First Team Recruitment.
The 34-year-old former Northern Ireland international defender ruptured his Achilles tendon in training in March and announced his retirement in the close season after making nearly 450 senior appearances.
Flanagan replaces Jon Duckett, who moved to Southend over the summer after two years in the role.
Writing on LinkedIn, he said: “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity, but I also know this moment hasn’t happened overnight. For the last seven to eight years, alongside playing, I’ve worked hard away from the pitch – completing courses, continuing into higher education and constantly trying to develop my understanding of the game beyond being a player.
“The role isn’t a destination. It’s another important step in my development and an opportunity made available to me by Robbie (Cowling), Dan (Cowley) and Nick (Cowley) to help continue my learning while improving and challenging myself [and] for that I am very grateful.”
When he was not playing for the U’s last season, Flanagan often watched home matches from the gantry and gave his thoughts to Head Coach Danny Cowley and Assistant Head Coach Nicky Cowley.
He will now be in charge of spotting potential signings for the League Two club while continuing his rehabilitation from his injury.
Danny Cowley has said before that he believes players’ experience of competing with and against hundreds of others makes them good at identifying the right players to add to a squad.
‘Role makes complete sense’
Flanagan enjoyed a 17-year playing career, during which he won 15 senior caps for his country.
He started at MK Dons at the beginning of the 2009/10 season. During his time with the club, he also had loan spells at Kettering, Gillingham, Barnet, Stevenage and Plymouth, before moving to Burton in August 2015. He went on to play for Sunderland and Shrewsbury before arriving at Colchester in the 2024 close season.
He told Colchester’s website: “Having spent two years here as a player, I’ve developed a real connection with the club and have seen first-hand the progress that has been made and the positive direction we are now moving in.
“For me, this role makes complete sense. I’m excited to use my experience and understanding of the game to help support Dan and Nick, ensuring our recruitment is aligned with what they need and the direction we want to take the football club.”
Colchester, who had two seasons in the Championship from 2006 to 2008, have just started their 11th consecutive campaign in League Two.
