Former Manchester City Under-21 Head Coach Brian Barry-Murphy is joining Leicester City as Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Assistant.

The Irishman left City in July after three years in order to seek a “new challenge”. He had been with the club for two years and won consecutive Premier League 2 titles with them, in 2022 and 2023.

When he was appointed Head Coach at the end of November, Van Nistelrooy brought in only one new member of staff – Assistant and Goalkeeper Coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar, with whom he had worked for a short period at Manchester United.

First-Team Coach Ben Dawson, Set Piece Coach Andrew Hughes and Goalkeeper Coach Danny Alcock all remained from the previous regime of Steve Cooper.

When asked about Barry-Murphy’s impending appointment at his press conference today (December 24th), Van Nistelrooy said: “I think it’s not official yet, but I can confirm that 99.9% it is done on the contracts.

“I’m very happy to add him to the coaching team. I think it’s a very important factor in the translation of the game model into the training pitch, developing the team, the units, and the individuals to the maximum, and he’s excellent in that, so I’m very happy that we can add him to the team.”

Leicester appointed another former Manchester City U21s Head Coach, Enzo Maresca, as their manager in June 2023 and he promptly led them back to the Premier League. Boosted by the success of that appointment, they have been keeping close tabs on Barry-Murphy, who is regarded as one of the best young coaches in the country.
