LIAM MASON is leaving Blackburn Rovers after eight years to become the Lead Sport Scientist at Newcastle United.

His Rovers swansong will be their final league game of the season, at Birmingham City on Saturday. Mason joined the club as an intern in June 2014 and rose through the ranks, eventually replacing Chris Rush as Head of Performance in August 2020.

The Championship side are undergoing a number of changes behind the scenes, with manager Tony Mowbray out of contract after Saturday and, as TGG previously revealed, Head of Recruitment John Park also going.

Newcastle have been having an overhaul of their own since Eddie Howe arrived as manager in November. Mason's boss will be Head of Performance Dan Hodges, who arrived with Howe towards the end of last year.

Mason will be largely concerned with rehab after Cristian Fernandez, the club’s Rehab Fitness Coach, exited in October. Head of Sport Science Callum Walsh left in December after just five months at the club.
