Arsenal have appointed Max Porter as the new Head Coach of their Under-21 team, replacing Mehmet Ali, who joined Brentford last month.
Porter has been with the Gunners since 2017 and will be supported by Professional Development Phase Lead Coach Ken Gillard.
Reports said that former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who had also coached in the club’s Academy, was among other candidates considered.
Porter joined the club as Under-9s Coach and has been Head Coach for numerous of the club’s age levels, including Under-13s, Under-17s and Under-19s, as well as being Professional Development Phase Youth Lead Coach.
He was also Under-21s Assistant Coach so has already worked at this level, preparing players for senior football.
Arsenal Academy Manager Per Mertesacker said: “Max has got the qualities needed to be a successful leader and coach. The environment he creates for staff and young players is always one of high challenge and ultimate care.
“Max is driving the highest standards and is a brilliant colleague and coach. We are all looking forward to supporting Max as he continues to develop in this role, and thank him for all his hard work and commitment so far.”
Adam Birchall remains as the club’s Under-18s Head Coach.
