Wrexham have started a Pre-Application Consultation for a new first-team building at their Colliers Park training ground which they aim to open before the start of next season.

The proposed Training Pavillion (imagined in a 3D render above) will provide a self-contained training environment on a single site, including a gym, changing rooms, physio and medical spaces, kit room, dining area and office space.

Currently the men’s first team train on the pitches at Colliers Park but do some of their gym and performance work at the Racecourse Ground (where a state-of-the-art performance gym opened in 2023) and some of their additional recovery work and meetings at the Carden Park Hotel near Chester.

Colliers Park is also used by Welsh international squads, University students and local football groups, but the new building will be exclusively for the use of Wrexham men’s first team.

The facility is part of the club’s significant investment into Colliers Park, in conjunction with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and Wrexham University.

The idea is that Wrexham use the building for up to five years, until the club finds and buys a new permanent training facility of its own.

The Colliers Park site is owned by Wrexham University and operated under a long-term lease by the FAW as the National Football Development Centre. Wrexham originally built and owned Colliers Park, which was opened in 1997 at a cost of £750,000, but it was sold in 2011 along with the Racecourse Ground to the University as part of cost-cutting during the club’s financial struggles.

The FAW later invested heavily – to the tune of more than £4m – to turn it into the National Development Centre.

Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson said: “While the search for a permanent training ground for our men’s first team continues, the proposed Training Pavilion will significantly enhance our day-to-day operations – ensuring the first team can work solely in one dedicated facility rather than being split across sites.

“We would like to thank the Football Association of Wales and Wrexham University for their continued support and co-operation and look forward to seeing the proposed plans come to fruition.”

FAW CEO Noel Mooney added: “Colliers Park continues to evolve into a modern training centre, providing Wrexham and the FAW with an environment that supports success on the field. We have seen two top class pitches developed and now the Club’s investment into the infrastructure will bring Colliers Park to another level.

“We have built strong relationships across both organisations, and we look forward to strengthening these further in the coming years.”

Professor Joe Yates, Vice Chancellor and CEO of Wrexham University, said: “This proposed investment into Colliers Park highlights the positive impact that collaboration between Wrexham University, the Football Association of Wales and Wrexham AFC can have for the city of Wrexham and North Wales.

“Working together strategically strengthens our shared ambitions for sporting excellence, skills development and inclusive growth, delivering long term benefits for the region.”
