Gus Williams has been appointed as the new Academy Manager at Championship side Wrexham.
The 54-year-old joins from the Football Association of Wales (FAW), where he had been National Talent Identification Pathway Manager since April 2023. At Category Three Wrexham he replaces Andy Lowe, who left in the summer after two years in post.
Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson said: “I am delighted to welcome Gus to the club as our new Academy Manager. In his previous role at the Football Association of Wales, Gus was responsible for identifying and developing the best young Welsh talent and putting them on the pathway to future international success.
“With our investment in the Academy at Darland, our objective is to provide the best facilities and environment to attract, nurture and develop football talent in the region, providing them with a clear pathway to the first team.
“Gus’s experience and knowledge in the area of player development, allied to our existing Academy coaches and staff, will play a key part in helping us reach and maintain our objective.
Williams was Head of Player Recruitment at Blackburn in 2022/23, but has spent the majority of his career with the FAW, joining them in 2000 as Regional Development Co-Ordinator and going on to hold senior coach development and scouting positions.
From 2012 to 2022 he was National Talent ID Manager and former Wales Technical Director Osian Roberts described him as the man responsible for “unearthing the talent which has taken us to major tournaments.”
He has previous experience at Wrexham, having coached at their Academy in 2007/8 when Steve Cooper was Academy Manager.
“Having previously coached at this iconic club 20 years ago under the stewardship of Steve Cooper it is a genuine honour and pleasure to return in the capacity of Academy Manager,” Williams said.
“Working alongside a great team of staff who are aligned to develop not only good players but equally as important good people.
“We’ve been entrusted by the parents and the wider club ownership to work with children and facilitate their journey across adolescents into young adults and transition into adults.
“As they pursue their quest to become professional footballers and that alone is a tremendous privilege and is acknowledged by every member of staff here.
“As a club our desire to make a difference in the local community is fundamental and the synergy we feel between the club and its passionate and loyal supporters fuels that dynamic.
“This has an impactful difference on the football landscape both across North Wales and Wales in general.
“It is a genuine pleasure to be here, and support as well help people and players grow and develop to become the person and player they want to be.
