Matt Wells has left his position as Tottenham Assistant after three-and-a-half years to take up his first Head Coach role, at Colorado Rapids in the MLS.

The 37-year-old has a long association with Tottenham. He is the grandson of Double winner Cliff Jones and was an Academy player at the club before becoming Under-18s coach in 2018.

He went on to coach their U23s before becoming Scott Parker’s Assistant at Fulham, Bournemouth and Club Brugge. In April 2023, he returned to Tottenham to assist Interim Head Coach Ryan Mason and remained under Ange Postecoglou and then Thomas Frank.

Frank said: “When Matt joined my staff I knew it was his dream to become a Head Coach and while I would have loved to have kept him with us for longer, I would never stand in the way of him realising that dream.

“We are all delighted for Matt. He has contributed greatly to the club over a long period of time. He’s an excellent coach, a great person and has a big future ahead of him. We wish him all the best.”

At Colorado he replaces former Manchester United Assistant Chris Armas, who departed at the end of the 2025 season in October.

Wells told Colorado’s official website: “I’m a very ambitious individual who has been surrounded by elite players and managers for the past seven years, and I’m excited to bring my experience and winning mentality to this organisation.

“From the very outset of our discussions, it was clear the club shared my ambitions to create something special and compete for the highest honours.

“Of course it’s a difficult decision to leave a team playing Champions League football, but everything about the people and project at Colorado made the choice clear for me. I can’t wait to get to work with this exciting young squad and transmit my footballing idea so that we can deliver a wining brand of football our fans can be proud of.”

President Pádraig Smith added: “Matt brings extensive Premier League experience, a proven commitment to player development, and a clear tactical identity shaped by his work under some of the modern game’s most respected managers.

“His background aligns with our long-term vision for the club, and we look forward to the next chapter under his leadership.”
