Former Swansea City Sporting Director Paul Watson has joined Championship leaders Middlesbrough in the new role of Chief Technical Officer.

Watson worked for the Swans from June 2023 to October 2024 after five years at Luton Town, where he was General Operations Manager and then Chief Operating Officer. Most recently he has worked for Premier League side Brentford.

At Boro, Watson will focus on the “technical and data side” of the football department. Along with Head of Recruitment Chris Jones, he will report into Head of Football Kieran Scott.

“Bringing Paul in is a real coup for us,” Scott said. “His focus is on the technical and data side of things and he comes here with a successful background at Luton, Swansea and Brentford.”

Meanwhile, Scott and Jones have both signed new long-term contracts with the North East club. Scott joined Boro in September 2021 from Norwich City, where he was Head of Recruitment, and became their first Head of Football.

Jones worked with Scott at Norwich as Lead Domestic and European Scout and joined Boro as Head of Scouting from Crystal Palace in September 2022. He was promoted to Head of Recruitment in February 2024.

“I’m delighted to sign a new contract and along with Chris we are excited about the future,” said Scott.
