Southampton have appointed Johannes Spors as their new Group Technical Director.
The German has previously held senior roles at RB Leipzig, Vitesse Arnhem and Genoa, and his most recent position was as Global Sporting Director of the 777 Group, which tried to buy Everton before being issued with a winding-up order by the High Court in October.
Southampton have not had a Technical Director since Jason Wilcox left to join Manchester United in April. Mark Bitcon was promoted from Director of Performance to Director of Football Operations in August and will work closely with Spors at the club’s Staplewood Training Centre.
Spors will report into club CEO Phil Parsons and work across Sport Republic’s portfolio of teams – which also includes Valenciennes in France and Goztepe in Turkey – and ensure “a cohesive approach to football strategy, player development and performance.”
Southampton said the 42-year-old’s “expertise in talent identification, recruitment strategy, and long-term squad development” would be “instrumental as the club looks to strengthen its football operations.”
Spors added: “I’m excited to finally start work at Southampton. Saints are a club with a great history and commitment to developing players, not only in the Academy, but also at First Team level.
“I look forward to working with the team at Staplewood to build a strategy that helps bring success on the pitch.”
