Craig Ranson has been appointed as the new Director of Health and Performance for City Football Group (CFG) after spending more than nine years with the UK Sports Institute.

Ranson is a hugely experienced practitioner, having been Lead Physio for England Cricket, UK Athletics, Welsh Rugby and more. For the last nine years he has been Director of Athlete Health and Data for the UK Sports Institute (previously the English Institute of Sport).

At CFG, he replaces Dan Lewindon, who left in October to become Performance Director at Tottenham. CFG advertised the role in November, describing it as “a rare opportunity to shape the future of player health and performance across a truly global football organisation.”

Ranson will “combine strategic leadership with hands-on influence to enhance player care, injury prevention and performance standards across every club in the CFG family.”

He will oversee performance for Player Loans, plus the 12 clubs in CFG other than Manchester City.

The CFG clubs are City, Girona, Lommel, Troyes, Palermo, New York City, Montevideo City, Bahia, Melbourne City, Yokohama and Shenzhen Peng City, while their partner clubs are Club Bolívar, İstanbul Başakşehir and Al Jazira.

Ranson will report into Simon Timson, who is CFG’s overall Performance Director and oversees the men’s and women’s teams, plus the boys’ and girls’ Academies at City and the other clubs in the Group.

As you can see in the diagram below, Timson has four direct reports: Federico Genovesi (Director of Performance, Men’s First Team), James Cheeseman (Director of Performance, Academy) and Emma Deakin (Head of Performance, Women’s) and Ranson.

In turn, the quartet have five direct reports of their own: a Head of Performance, Head Physio, Nutritionist, Psychologist and Head of Sports Medicine.

We’ve shown Genovesi’s direct reports for the Men’s First Team: Chris Elderkin (Head of Performance), James Baldwin (Head Physio), Tom Parry (Nutritionist), David Young (Head of Psychology) and Max Sala (Head of Sports Medicine).
