Academy Manager Robin Nicholls is leaving Sunderland at the end of the season to join New York City in the MLS.

The 35-year-old joined the Black Cats in October 2022 from Southampton, where he was Assistant Academy Manager.

Robin is an impressive and highly-motivated leader with a strong track record of developing young talent and a clear passion for nurturing talent,” said Brad Sims, New York City FC CEO.

“Our Academy is a crucial part of the club’s identity and long-term success, and Robin’s vision and leadership will play an important role in strengthening our youth player development. We look forward to the impact he’ll make across the club and next generation of New York City players.”

Nicholls added: “The opportunity of being appointed as the new Academy Director for New York City FC is an honour. New York is not only a fantastic city, but the background of the people who live there, the different socioeconomic backgrounds, mean the potential for talent is exceptional.

“It’s one of the best and most diverse talent pools in the world, in my opinion. I wanted to tap into that and really help develop that level of talent to hopefully go on and play at the highest level one day.

“The club is headed in the right direction, and with the opening of Etihad Park, it’s an exciting time to be a part of.”

Nicholls replaces Morten Grahn, who left New York City after four years in September to return to FC Copenhagen as Development Director. Grahn had previously spent a decade with the Danish club, latterly as their Under-19 Head Coach.

Category One Sunderland placed 17th in TGG’s Academy Productivity Rankings for 2024/25, up from 22nd the season before.
