Former Liverpool Elite Development Coach Vitor Matos is to be announced as the new Head Coach of Swansea City and will bring a trio of assistants with him to the club.
Swansea have agreed to pay a €1million (£880,000) release clause to Matos’s current club, Maritimo, where he has been Head Coach since the summer. The 37-year-old has also agreed personal terms.
His Assistants, who he is bringing from Maritime, will be:

- Toze Mendes: Experienced coach who has worked in China, Saudi Arabia and his native Portugal. and
- Goncalo Ricca: Nephew of former Chelsea Manager Andre Villas-Boas. Has experience as both a coach and analyst.
Maritimo confirmed on Friday that Swansea had met Matos’s release clause and that he would be departing the club. Matos joined Maritimo in the summer of 2025 for his first senior Head Coach role and the club are currently top of Liga Portugal 2.
Matos appeared on Episode #66 of the TGG Podcast earlier this year, giving extensive insights into his coaching approach and experience.
When asked if he would like to return to work in England one day, he said: “It is a place where everyone loves football. I loved to live in England, in Liverpool, and I loved football in England. It is a place I would love to be.
Darren O’Dea took interim charge of Swansea’s Championship game at Bristol City on Saturday, which they lost 3-0. The Swans are 20th in the Championship.
Swansea parted company with Alan Sheehan on November 11th after a run of one win in seven Championship matches that left them in 18th place.
Matos was Elite Development Coach at Liverpool from 2019 and 2024, working closely with Jurgen Klopp and Assistant Pep Lijnders.
His job was to create a connection between the first team and Academy, while also assisting with training sessions for the senior and Under-23 sides. After Liverpool, he assisted Lijnders during a brief and unsuccessful spell at RB Salzburg in 2024, before taking charge at Maritimo.
