Richard Montague has been appointed as the new Director of Football at Swansea City, reuniting him with Manager Luke Williams.
The duo worked together at Notts County for 18 months, from July 2022, when Montague was Executive Director and Williams the Manager. During their first season together, the club secured promotion back to the Football League in 2022/23, before Williams left to become Swansea boss in January 2024.
In total, Montague worked for Notts County for five-and-a-half years and oversaw player recruitment, managerial appointments, Academy operations, medical, sports science and analysis.
He officially starts work with the Swans on Tuesday (February 18th) and will be responsible for overseeing “all football operations and supporting the club’s recruitment strategy,” the Championship club said.
The Swans have been looking for a new Director of Football since Paul Watson left after 16 months in October. In a statement, they said Montague’s “deep understanding of data analytics and his first-hand knowledge of the football industry and operations make him the outstanding candidate for this role.”
Montague joined Notts County as Executive Director (effectively Director of Football) in 2019, when Chris and Alex Reedtz took over the club. He had previously worked for the brothers at Football Radar, the predictions company they founded in 2009, rising to become Head of Football Analysis.
In this role he had led a team of 100, developing advanced methods for football analysis and focusing on predicting game outcomes using match and player data.
In a joint statement, the Reedtz brothers said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Richard over the last 14 years and we’re hugely grateful for everything he’s done in that time, which includes helping us establish our recruitment strategy at Notts.
“Not only is Richard a fully-dedicated professional, he’s also a fantastic person who will remain a friend of ours and the club’s. His departure will not affect our ongoing recruitment processes – and it presents us with an opportunity to review our current set-up to ensure we’re in a strong position to continue the club’s positive progress.”
Montague is Swansea’s fifth Director of Football in less than five-and-a-half years, after Leon Britton, Mark Allen, Josh Marsh and Watson.
