Monchi has been appointed as the new Sporting Director of Burnley’s sister club Espanyol.

The 57-year-old Spaniard, one of the most respected executives in European football, joins the Catalan club with a contract until 2029. He will lead their entire sporting department, reporting directly to Burnley owner and Espanyol President Alan Pace and CEO Mao Ye Wu.

Monchi was pictured today at Burnley’s Gawthorpe training ground with Pace as part of the announcement, underlining the close links between the two clubs. While his primary focus will be on Espanyol, the appointment signals serious ambition for the wider group.

For English football fans, Monchi is best remembered for his two-year spell at Aston Villa. He joined as President of Football Operations in June 2023, reuniting with Unai Emery, and played a key role during a period that delivered three successive European qualifications and a Champions League quarter-final.

He stepped down in September 2025 amid a tough start to the season, moving into an advisory role with the V Sports holding company.

Monchi’s reputation was forged at Sevilla, where he rose from club goalkeeper to one of the finest Sporting Directors in world football. Over two spells (2000–2017 and 2019–2023), he transformed the Andalusian club through a world-class scouting network and sharp transfer business.

He was central to their incredible run of seven Europa League titles and consistently turned profits on player trading while developing stars like Jesús Navas, Sergio Ramos, and Dani Alves.

His ability to identify and develop talent – while trading smartly – made him a legend in Spain and earned him moves to Roma and then to the Premier League with Villa.

What this means for Espanyol and Burnley

Espanyol, currently battling to maintain their La Liga status, gain a proven operator who thrives in building squads on a sensible budget while nurturing Academy talent.

For Burnley fans, this is an intriguing development. Pace has long spoken about creating synergies across the group. While Monchi’s day-to-day role is at RCDE Stadium, his arrival raises questions about potential future collaboration or best-practice sharing between the two clubs.

Pace has been personally involved in recruiting Monchi, viewing him as the right figure to bring long-term stability and upward momentum to Espanyol, a club with a proud history but recent turbulence.
