Greg Miller is leaving Portsmouth after five years to become the new Academy Manager at Charlton.
The Scot will take up his new role in March after completing his notice period at Pompey, where he has been Academy Manager since April 2021.
At Charlton, he replaces Tom Pell, who left after three-and-a-half years in December to become Head of Academy Operations at Tottenham. Legendary youth developer Steve Avory has been running Charlton’s Academy on an interim basis since then and played a key role in Miller’s appointment.
Meanwhile, Portsmouth Head of Coaching James Barlow has been promoted to replace Miller at Fratton Park.
Charlton are consistently one of the best-performing Category Two Academies in the country. They placed 23rd in TGG’s Academy Productivity Rankings for 2024/25, second only behind Sheffield United among the the Cat 2s – although they were down from 12th place the previous season.
Announcing Miller’s appointment, Charlton Managing Director James Rodwell said: “It’s no secret that we have one of the best Academies in the country and I’m delighted that Greg is joining us as our new Academy Manager to help drive us forward
“We interviewed a number of outstanding candidates through a detailed and testing process and Greg stood out at every stage. He brings an excellent combination of on-field experience and an exciting vision for the future of our Academy.”
Portsmouth were 40th in TGG’s Academy Productivity Rankings for 2024/25, up from 44th the previous season. They were the fifth best performing Cat 3, behind Exeter, Huddersfield, Plymouth and Luton.
Their Chief Executive, Andrew Cullen, paid tribute to Miller, saying: “Greg has been an exceptional leader of our Academy operation over the past five years, delivering outstanding and lasting transformational change across both our operations and coaching framework.
“He has been a highly valued colleague and as a member of the club’s senior leadership team, has also made a significant contribution to the wider development of Portsmouth Football Club.
“I am pleased for Greg that his departure coincides with the exciting news that highly regarded under-18s prospect Tayo Singerr has this week signed his first professional contract. We are extremely grateful for Greg’s outstanding contribution to youth development at Pompey and we wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.
“At the same time, we are delighted to announce the promotion of James Barlow from Academy Head of Coaching to Academy Manager.
“James is a hugely talented coach developer, highly respected across the wider national academy system and someone who is Portsmouth born and bred.
“I very much look forward to working closely with James and the entire academy team as we continue over the coming years to develop more young and talented homegrown players.”
Miller did an in-depth interview with TGG in October 2019 when he was Head of Academy Coaching at Barnsley, prior to his move to Portsmouth.
He explained that his coaching inspiration was his father Alex, who was First Team Coach at Liverpool when they won the Champions League under Rafa Benitez.
“In terms of tactical depth, my father, Alex has been the most influential for me, as he had a fantastic coaching career and would often watch games with me and discuss the pros and cons of a particular formation,” Miller said.
