Manchester United have revamped their medical department, with Imtiaz Ahmad arriving from Crystal Palace as Head of Sports Medicine and William Fotherby from Everton as First Team Doctor.
United announced in March that Gary O’Driscoll was leaving as Head of Medicine after 18 months and that Jim Moxon was exiting as First Team Doctor. It was the decision of both men, rather than the club, to leave and Moxon is now Brighton’s Doctor.
Sam Erith, who arrived at the club in September 2024 as Interim Performance Director and was subsequently promoted to the role on a permanent basis, has led the revamp.
Ahmad is a hugely experienced and respected practitioner. He has been Head of Medicine at QPR and Crystal Palace and Doctor at Millwall and Tottenham and was also on the Medical Panel of the Pakistan Cricket Board on a part-time basis for five years, as well as being the current chairman of the FA’s Medical Society, a role he has held for nearly 15 years.
Fotherby joined Everton in the summer of 2022 after seven years working as a Doctor and General Practitioner in the NHS. He was the Toffees’ Club Doctor for two years, before becoming Lead Men’s First Team Doctor at the start of last season.
He has worked in sport before, having been Team Doctor for both British Gymnastics for almost two years and for Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club for almost three-and-a-half years.
Rebuilt training complex
The arrivals are the latest in a summer of change under minority owners INEOS, who are in charge of football matters at the club. This has seen a number of long-serving staff leave in a round of redundancies and some other new appointments made too.
Among the departures were First Team Fitness Coach Paolo Gaudino, who served under 11 Managers in his 13 years at the club, and Emerging Talent Lead Scout David Harrison, who had been with the club since 2017.
However, the club appointed Jason Wilcox as their new Director of Football and Michael Farrell as their first Head of Football Culture and Development.
They also opened their rebuilt £50m upgraded training complex at Carrington as planned on time for the start of the new season.
