Liverpool have parted company with Set Piece Coach Aaron Briggs after 18 months.
Briggs joined the Reds in July 2024 as an Individual Development Coach, with responsibility for working on bespoke programmes with players – especially those making the transition from Academy to first team.
Although he had never worked with Head Coach Arne Slot before, he knew Director of Football Development Pedro Marques from their time together at Manchester City.
Briggs had been City’s Head of Performance Analysis, while Marques was Global Lead for Football Performance for City Football Group.
When Liverpool advertised for a dedicated Set Piece Coach in the summer of 2024, Briggs took on the role on an interim basis while the recruitment process took place.
A combination of Briggs doing well in the role and Liverpool failing to find their desired candidate meant he got the job on a permanent basis, becoming the club’s first dedicated Set Piece Coach.
At the same time, Brazilian Luiz Fernando Iubel came in to take Briggs’ former role as Individual Lead Coach.
Set Pieces are a fundamental part of the modern game. Billy Coulston helps improve your understanding, preparation & delivery of them.
After the 3-1 Champions League win over AC Milan in September 2024, Slot highlighted the work that his coaching staff had done on set pieces, with his side’s first two goals having come via this route.
However, Liverpool have struggled badly on set pieces this season. Excluding penalties, no Premier League team has conceded more set piece goals than Liverpool’s 12.
In terms of attacking set pieces, the team are averaging 2.4 goals scored per 100 set pieces, with only Brentford faring worse in the Premier League (The Athletic).
Last week Slot said: “I know the importance of set-pieces – it gets more and more and more. That’s why we are so annoyed by our current record, because it’s impossible to [finish in the] top four, top five, with our set-piece balance, let alone winning the league.”
Briggs background is in analysis, with Blackpool, Preston and then Manchester City, where he spent nine years.
He then became a pioneer of the coach-analyst role, becoming Tactical Analysis Coach, Assistant and Head of Methodology at AS Monaco in France.
After that, the UEFA Pro Licence holder became Assistant Head Coach at German side Wolfsburg, before working as a consultant with UEFA, supporting their Technical Observer and Analysis Programme.
Liverpool have no immediate plans to hire a replacement for Briggs and will split set piece duties between their existing first-team coaching staff.
