Former Liverpool Under-21s Head Coach Barry Lewtas has joined the England men’s development coaching set-up on an interim basis for the new season.
Lewtas, who worked for the Reds for 12 years, has been given a dual role. He has been named as Head Coach of the Under-16s and Assistant Coach for the Under-20 side alongside Tom Huddlestone, working under Head Coach Ben Futcher. Both his jobs run until December 2025.
Lee Carsley’s Under-21s coaching team of Ashley Cole and Tim Dittmer remains unchanged while, as we reported in June, Chris Ramsey returns to the England fold as Professional Development Phase lead, overseeing the Under-17 to Under-20 age groups.
Ramsey was Head Coach of the England Under-20 team in the late 1990s, leading them to the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1999, and was a guest on episode 33 of the TGG podcast in 2021.
Kalam Mooniaruck also returns to the Football Association (FA), having left West Ham United after seven years. He becomes Youth Development Phase lead for the Under-15 and Under-16 age groups. Mooniaruck previously worked for the FA as a Youth Coach Educator.
Neil Ryan led the Under-17 side which just missed out on reaching the semi-finals in this summer’s U17 European Championships. The team has also qualified for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar this November and will be led by Liam Bramley, with Ryan moving on to take charge of the Under-18 side and Will Antwi leading the Under-19s.
‘Greater continuity’
Dittmer, who is also FA Head of Coaching, said: “We are excited to be entering a new season that has particular significance given the revamped UEFA format across U17, U18, and U19 age groups, which we hope provides further unique opportunities for our players and teams. We are also excited to be taking part in the new-look FIFA U17 World Cup, having qualified in March 2025.
“In readiness, we have made adjustments in how we support our teams as staff. Notably, we have appointed two new phase leads in Chris and Kalam, who each bring a wealth of experience to the roles.
“Additionally, we have made a conscious effort to provide greater continuity in staffing across the cycles which naturally occur within the programme.”
