Role purpose

The role of the Strength and Conditioning Coach is to maximise player’s physical performance capabilities and mitigate risk of injury by providing effective planning, programming and physical preparation coaching.

They lead on the management, planning and delivery of the day-to-day gym based physical training for our players. In collaboration with the Technical, Performance and Medical teams (as a structured multi-disciplinary team), this role contributes to ensuring there is a clear philosophy and pathway for player development.

The ideal candidate will be working with elite athletes, even better if it’s with female athletes, and will have a strong S&C background – both practically and academically.

Main duties/ responsibilities

1. Delivery

  • Provide high quality strength and conditioning support to all First Team players during all training sessions, leading on the programming and delivery of gym-based strength and conditioning, ensuring the delivery of high level coaching support.
  • Support, when necessary, with the programming and delivery of on-field conditioning, warm-ups, speed development and individual development sessions as required.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Performance to deliver cutting edge, bespoke monitoring, management and development plans.
  • Use Performance data in line with the clubs performance strategy to regularly assess, and refine the effectiveness of gym based training programmes.
  • Work closely with the Academy Strength & Conditioning coaches to ensure a consistent philosophy is applied to best prepare age group players to progress.
  • Facilitate an effective and engaging working environment, encouraging an autonomous and athlete centric training programme. 
  • Maintaining the upkeep of the gym space, ensuring equipment is appropriately cleaned, stored, and serviced to ensure the maintenance of an elite training environment.

2. Planning and Monitoring – with Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT)

  • Work closely with MDT colleagues to develop and implement female-specific movement assessment screening and gym-based profiling, developing individualised movement correction and development programmes.
  • Input into the development of a robust athletic development strategy with emphasis on the testing, monitoring, analysis and visualisation of athlete progressions.
  • Collaborate with Medical and Technical teams on Return to Play programmes and support.
  • Work with the MDT to ensure all players receive individual physical programs, monitoring and management to track player development.
  • Input in to the creation and monitoring of off-season training programmes.
  • Contribute to the implementation and monitoring of optimal female health, wellbeing, recovery, physical profiling, strength and conditioning, training and match load monitoring, nutrition, psychology and return to play strategies.
  • As part of the MDT, take part in the review, development and coordination of Applied Performance and Medical research projects, contributing to an evolving, world-leading high performance support programme.
  • Liaise with other clubs to provide continued support to loaned players.
  • Share relevant programming information with National Team staff to ensure smooth transition between club and country programmes.

3. Professional Development

  • Attend and assist with workshops, meetings, professional development courses/workshops and other development opportunities.
  • Provide support and mentorship to interns and other placements.

4. Other ad-hoc duties as assigned from time-to-time by management

What we are looking for

Qualifications & training

Any specific qualifications or technical requirements listed here will be mandated by league and/or governing body rules

Essential:

  • A BSc (or equivalent) in health-related, kinesiology or exercise/sports science.
  • Masters degree a relevant performance related field.
  • UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) Accredited Strength and Conditioning credential (or league-accepted equivalent).
  • Emergency First Aid in Football (EFAIF).
  • UKAD Clean Sport Advisor.
  • FA Safeguarding.

Desirable:

  • Additional strength and conditioning related qualification e.g. ASCA Level 2, CSCS.
  • BASES Accredited Sports Scientist.
  • Evidence of engagement with professional development and community of practice.

Knowledge, skills & experience

Essential:

  • Demonstrable experience, likely to be 5+ years, of delivering physical performance coaching.
  • Experience of working with female athletes and understanding of female physiology.
  • Ability and desire to work effectively within an MDT.
  • Strong experience of planning and delivering gym-based and pitch-based football programmes.
  • Exceptional organisational skills with strong attention to detail and ability to prioritise and multi-task under pressure.
  • Experience using sports science technologies such as Teambuildr, GPS and HR monitoring, VBT technologies, flywheel training device, VALD (NordBord, ForceFrame and ForceDecks) and athlete management systems such as Smartabase. 
  • Demonstrate a clear ability to effectively collect and interpret the neccessary data to inform programming and training design.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with high levels of self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
  • Passion for women’s sport, and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, and to commit to travel to away games and tours if/when neccessary.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and experience using data visualisation software such as Tableau, Power BI and programming such as R code.

Desirable:

  • Experience within other high-level football competitions such as UEFA Champions League, other FIFA competitions.
  • Experience of developing and implementing innovative ideas which lead to successful results.
