About the role

We’re looking for an experienced and innovative elite level coach to support our First Team by leading the strategic planning, design, and execution of all offensive and defensive set-play routines. The Set Play Coach will work closely with the first-team coaching staff, analysts, and players to maximise performance outcomes from dead-ball situations.

Collaborating with the wider Analysis Team you will conduct detailed video and data based analysis to identify set-piece trends and vulnerabilities, delivering high-quality, position specific training sessions to ensure high performance.

Your impact

Possessing a UEFA A licence, you will have significant experience of set-play coaching and development gained in an elite coaching environment.

As such, you will be used to rigours and demands of first team football having worked collaboratively to deliver high performance set-piece coaching and analysis using tools such Hudl, Wyscout and Coach Paint.

You will be fully up to date with current global coaching trends and innovations.

Working closely with our Head Coach and broader, innovative, elite First Team Coaching and multi-disciplinary teams you will be resilient to meet the high workloads and sustain output throughout the intense demands of the schedules of professional football.

This role is based in Newcastle upon Tyne, therefore please note, if you are not located in the North East and unable to relocate, we regret that we will not be able to progress your application.

Role responsibilities

  • Develop and implement innovative set-piece strategies (attacking and defensive).
  • Conduct detailed opposition analysis to identify set-piece trends and vulnerabilities.
  • Collaborate with analysts to produce video and data-driven insights.
  • Deliver high-quality, position-specific training sessions.
  • Monitor and evaluate set-piece performance metrics.
  • Provide individual feedback to players on roles and execution.
  • Stay updated on global trends and innovations in set-piece tactics.

Role requirements

  • Perform duties with due regard to club policies and procedures and legislative
    requirements at all times.
  • Ensure implementation of the club’s health & safety, safeguarding, welfare and
    equality policies to create a safe working environment for all.
  • Ensure working practices are compliant with relevant legislation and data protection
    legislation and/or general data protection regulations (GDPR) requirements.
  • Undertake continuous professional development (CPD) training and/or additional
    training as identified or as required.

Qualifications & training

Essential:

  • UEFA A Licence (minimum).

Desirable:

  • MSc in a sports discipline
  • CAA Drone FlyerID licence holder
  • Proficient with data portals (Statsbomb, Impect, Opta, Second Spectrum, Insights)
  • Proficient with data manipulation & visualisation tools (Excel/Numbers and Tableau)

Knowledge, skills & experience

Essential:

  • Significant proven experience in elite football (preferably at first-team level).
  • Strong tactical understanding of set-piece phases.
  • Proficiency in video analysis tools (e.g., Hudl, Wyscout, Coach Paint).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a high-performance environment.

Desirable:

  • Background in sports science or performance analysis.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Track record of improving set-piece efficiency.
