Huddersfield Town have sacked Sporting Director Mark Cartwright, with the club looking unlikely to return to the Championship at the first attempt.

Cartwright, the former Stoke City Technical Director, joined Huddersfield in July 2023 under new owner Kevin Nagle. The duo knew each other from their time together with the United Soccer League, where Cartwright had been League Sporting Director and Nagle the owner of Sacramento Republic.

However, their time together at Huddersfield has been hugely disappointing, with the club relegated from the Championship last summer and now lying ninth in League One, five points off the play-off places.

They have had five managers in the less than two years that Nagle and Cartwright have been at the club – Neil Warnock, Darren Moore, Jon Worthington, André Breitenreiter and Michael Duff – and now the ownership have decided that responsibility for poor performance should lie with the Sporting Director, who had succeeded Leigh Bromby.

CEO Jake Edwards said: “Undergoing a full review of our sporting operations ahead of another important summer for the Club, we have made the difficult decision to relieve Mark of his duties with immediate effect.

“Retaining the full support of the Chairman, our collective efforts will be focussed on completing a positive summer of activity both on and off the field, allowing us to head into the 2025/26 season with a renewed belief and confidence in all departments.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Mark for his efforts during his time at Huddersfield Town and wish him the very best for the future.”
