Goldberg becomes Director of Soccer at New York Red Bulls

New York Red Bulls have promoted Head of Player Personnel Sam Goldberg to become their Director of Soccer.
Goldberg, who has been with the club since 2021, will oversee their scouting, data and personnel departments and will be responsible for long-term strategic planning, trade, transfer and contract negotiations and salary cap management.
Sessions with: Victor Orta, David Webb, Sam Goldberg, Stevie Grieve, Neil Whitbread, Tom Goodall and Nick Hammond/ Ben Stevens/ Ben Knapper.
In his previous role with the club, which he took up in May 2024, he led planning for the salary cap and squad, as well as working on data science and analytics, research and long-term business planning for the sporting department. He has also worked for Red Bulls as a Data Scientist and then Manager for Data Science and Analytics.
In 2022, Goldberg delivered a presentation called “Building a data-driven culture” at TGG’s Scouting & Recruitment Webinar.
He began his career in football as an intern in the Data Science and Analytics team at Minnesota United over the summer of 2018.
After a brief spell playing professional baseball for the Roswell Invaders, he returned to football and spent a year as a Data Scientist for DC United.
He then spent three months as a Development Coach for the Chicago Cubs baseball team in 2020 and joined Red Bulls the following February.
Away from the sport, he works as an Adjunct Professor of Soccer Analytics at Columbia University in New York.
Red Bulls are fourth in the 15-team Eastern Conference of the MLS after three matches of the new season.
They have won the Conference six times in the regular season – the last occasion being in 2018 – and won its play-offs in 2024.
