Furlong joins Watford as U21s coach
Former Watford striker Paul Furlong, who left QPR after 14 years in December, has joined the Hornets as Under-21s coach.
The former striker was Watford’s top scorer in 1992/93 and 1993/94 and his sale to Chelsea in 1994 for £2.3m helped generate funds to build the Rookery Stand.
“I really enjoyed my time here as a player and it’s a dream come true to be coming back,” Furlong said. “We have some top-quality players here, with good physical attributes, and I’m really encouraged by what I’ve seen so far.
“A couple have played for the first team recently and that’s what we want to do – produce players for Watford Football Club.”
Head of Coaching Micah Hyde, who previously worked with Furlong at QPR, added: “I’m really pleased to get Paul into the Academy to work with Adrian and the U21s. He has a wealth of experience and a strong track record, and I’m sure he’ll be a great addition to the club.
“He understands the culture and values of Watford and I’m looking forward to seeing the positive impact he can have.”
Furlong served for 14 years in QPR’s Academy, latterly as Development Squad (17s to 21s) Head Coach, before leaving in December. He had originally joined the club as a part-time coach in 2011.
