Former Manchester United and England defender Phil Jones has left Blackburn Rovers after just four months as First Team Coach — and is not the only one heading for the exit at the Championship club.
Jones returned to his boyhood club in February under Michael O’Neill and departs as part of an exodus of senior staff this summer.
The 33-year-old, who came through the ranks at Rovers, returned to the club in February as part of the coaching staff assembled by O’Neill, who had taken charge on a dual basis, combining the Blackburn job with his role as Northern Ireland manager.
O’Neill kept Rovers in the Championship but opted against committing to Ewood Park beyond the end of the season, instead returning to focus solely on his international jon. Following his exit and replacement by the returning Tony Mowbray, Jones confirmed his own departure on Instagram.
“As my time at Blackburn Rovers comes to an end, I’d just like to say thank you,” he wrote. “Returning to Blackburn was something I’d always hoped I’d get the chance to do, so I’m grateful it became a reality. I’ve loved being back at the club and have enjoyed every moment.
“A huge thank you to Michael O’Neill for the opportunity to be part of his coaching staff and for bringing me back to where it all started. Thank you also to all the players, staff and supporters for making my time here so enjoyable.
“Wishing everyone at the club nothing but success in the future.”
Rovers added: “Phil’s passion for Blackburn Rovers was evident throughout his time back at the club and while we are naturally disappointed to see him leave, we respect his decision to continue developing his coaching career.
“Everyone at Blackburn Rovers would like to thank Phil for his professionalism and commitment, and wish him every success in the future.”
Jones may not be out of work for long. He has been linked with a coaching role at Sheffield United, where Chris Wilder is reshaping his backroom team.
Jones was a speaker at our TGG Live 2025 Conference last year, appearing on a panel alongside Lee Johnson and John-Mark Sisman.
