Everton Club Doctor John Hollingsworth has stepped down after almost a decade, with William Fotherby promoted as his replacement.
Hollingsworth, who has been a Consultant Emergency Physician at Aintree University Hospital for the last 23 years, first joined the Toffees as Club Doctor in 2015.
He rose to national prominence in 2019 after playing a major role in treating Andre Gomes after the midfielder’s horror ankle injury against Tottenham. Gomes suffered a fracture dislocation of his right ankle after being fouled by Son Heung-min and many wondered if he would fully recover.
Incredibly – and in no small part thanks to Hollingsworth’s efforts – Gomes returned from what could have been a career-ending injury in just 111 days.
Speaking in 2020, the Portuguese player told the Daily Mail: “It was really important what he (Hollingsworth) did. He was really fast. I knew he wanted to do that. He put my ankle in the right place. I did my ligaments and a bone injury. He put it in place two times, rotating it and then putting it in place.”
Hollingsworth has been replaced by Fotherby, who has been promoted from Assistant Men’s First Team and Academy Doctor. Prior to arriving at Everton two years ago, Fotherby was Doctor for Wigan Warriors and for British Gymnastics and has also operated as a Match Day Doctor for Port Vale and AFC Fylde.
