Crawley Town have appointed Erdem Konyar as their new Director of Football.
It will be Konyar’s second spell with the League Two club, having been their Technical Director from December 2020 until April 2022.
In his new role, Konyar will work closely with First Team Manager Scott Lindsey, Owner Raphael Khalili and the club’s Data Intelligence team to oversee the football department and player recruitment.
Khalili said the club was “very pleased” Konyar was returning. He added: “During his previous time with the club, Erdem showed a deep commitment to our values, a strong connection with our supporters, and a genuine love for the badge. His passion for Crawley Town and everything this club represents has always been unmistakable. His experience, his professionalism and his ambition for the club make him the ideal person to help drive our football operations forward.”
Chief Executive Officer Tom Allman said: “Erdem was one of the first names who came to my mind when discussing this position with Raphael owing to his unwavering commitment to the town of Crawley and the supporters. I know Erdem will undertake this role with a club-first stance which was important and I am excited to support not just him, but the wider recruitment and footballing staff in order to move the club forwards.”
Konyar said: “It is an absolute honour to serve the club. The badge is in my heart, and I thank the Chairman, Tom and Scott for the opportunity. Some of my best footballing memories have come at this club, and I look forward to making many more during my second spell.”
‘Prioritise data and innovation’
Khalili’s company KB Sports and Leisure took over Crawley in August, promising a big focus on using data to improve the club.
At the time, Khalili said: “Our vision is to create a modern football club that balances on-pitch success with long-term stability. We will invest in infrastructure, prioritise data and innovation, and ensure Crawley Town is a club that reflects the values and energy of its supporters.”
The new owners laid out what they called a “six-pillar strategic approach” for the club:
- Strong foundations and doing the basics right
- Infrastructure investment
- Data-driven football
- Financial discipline
- Fan engagement
- Cultural identity
After the takeover, Lindsey said: “Raphael and the new board clearly understand what Crawley Town represents and, more importantly, what it can become.”
Crawley have not been afraid to use data analytics in the past. In 2022, under previous owners WAGMI United, they appointed as Director of Football, Chris Galley, who joined from data firm Statsbomb.
