Retired from playing at the age of 22 because of a recurring injury and studied Sport Science at Loughborough University. Then went into coaching, working his way up the ranks at Spurs to U18s boss, before leaving to take up the same role at Manchester United in 2016. Promoted to the first-team coaching staff under Jose Mourinho in 2018 and also worked under Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ralf Rangnick. Joined Ipswich Town in December 2021 when the club were coming off a run of one win in nine and began a remarkable transformation. Club won two consecutive promotions and will now compete in the Premier League for the first time since 2002.

Martyn Pert

Assistant

Moved from Manchester United to Ipswich with McKenna, having also been on the first-team staff under Solskjaer at Old Trafford. The UEFA Pro Licence holder has a remarkable personal story, having trained as a management consultant before embarking on a global tour in a bid to gain coaching knowledge. Has coached around the world, including at Coventry, Vancouver Whitecaps, Manchester United and the Bahrain national team.

Joined Ipswich in December of 2021 after time working at Fulham and Tottenham. Coaches the team as well as focusing on individual development, while co-ordinating with the analysts.

Appointed as a first-team coach in July 2024 after three years playing for the club under McKenna (who is three years his senior). Former Reading, Fulham, Hull and Aberdeen forward made seven appearances for the Nigeria national team.

Joined in the summer of 2025. Spent most of his playing career with AFC Bournemouth, after brief spells with Burnley and West Ham. Retired in 2023 and moved into coaching as an Assistant Coach with the Cherries’ Under-18 side.

Rene Gilmartin

Head of Goalkeeping

Former Swindon Town Assistant currently serves as Goalkeeper Coach for Ipswich and the Republic of Ireland. Started coaching in 2021 after retiring from playing with Bristol City.

Andy Rolls

Director of Performance

Moved to Ipswich in May 2021, having previously worked with Ashton and Probert at Bristol City. Was a physiotherapist at Watford, West Ham and Arsenal before that. Oversees all the medical, strength and conditioning and sports science functions at the club.

Matt Allen

Worked for Tottenham for 13 years before joining Ipswich in July 2023. Move reunited him with McKenna, with whom he had worked at the Tottenham Academy.

First Team Fitness Coach

Ex-Premier League player who retired in 2018 and became Stevenage’s Fitness Coach soon after. Stayed with the Hertfordshire club for three years before joining Ipswich in May 2021.

Promoted to current role in the summer of 2025, having joined the club in August 2024 as First Team Strength and Conditioning Coach. Before that, spent just over seven years at Bristol City as Strength and Conditioning Coach for different age group teams – the last 14 months of which was with the first team.

Has a degree in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Bath. Moved into football by becoming Head of Sports Science at Bath City. Then moved to Bristol City, Wales Women and finally Ipswich, in 2022.

Joined the club in August 2023 having worked as an Athletic Trainer and Body Coach in the USA.

Ian Ferguson

Club Doctor

Joined in July 2025 from Cardiff City where he had been First Team Doctor for eight months. Has also worked as Doctor for Newport County for four years, part-time Club Doctor for Bristol Rovers for six-and-a-half years and part-time Chief Medical Officer for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club for just over a year. Is also part-time Doctor for the Irish Football Association, a role he has held since January 2011.

Career started working in hospitals in East Anglia. Began work at Ipswich as a match-day physio in 1996, working his way up to become Head of Medical in 2021.

Worked in football since 2005. Started in the academies of Charlton, QPR and West Ham, before moving to the Hammers’ first team. Was later head physio at Reading and Rangers, as well as a first team role at Norwich. Has been at Ipswich since November 2024.

Appointed in the summer of 2025. Started his coaching career as First Team Head of Analysis and Assistant Coach for Italian Serie C club Vispesaro. Then spent the 2023/24 season as First Team Performance Analyst at Sampdoria and last season as First Team Performance Analyst – Set Piece Analyst at FC Midtjylland.

Was a staff writer and analyst for the tactics website Spielverlagerung and also an Opposition Analyst for Huddersfield Town before joining Ipswich.
