Chelsea cut three senior staff in ‘strategic reshaping’ of loans

Chelsea have removed three senior figures from their men’s first-team loans department in a move the club describes as “strategic development”.
Between them, Marlon Fahy, Ed Brand and Luis Nedio had racked up more than 30 years of service at Stamford Bridge. The cuts underline the club’s ongoing shift away from the old ‘loan army; model toward a tighter, more regulated operation.
Chelsea’s loan numbers have fallen sharply in recent seasons – from 38 at the start of 2018/19 to 21 now – as FIFA’s six-player international-loan cap and the Boehly/Clearlake preference for outright sales and multi-club partnerships have reshaped the department.
The three departures
Marlon Fahy (Senior Loan Operations & Performance Analyst) was the longest-serving of the trio. He joined Chelsea on an internship in July 2012 as Player Research Assistant and, just a year later, was handed the chance by former Technical Director Michael Emenalo to help Eddie Newton establish the club’s loan department ‘from scratch’, with guidance from former Head of Psychology & Sport Science Tim Harkness.
Fahy was promoted to Senior Loan Operations & Performance Analyst in June 2018 and played a central role in turning what began as a small operation into a progressive and fully integrated player-development programme.
In his LinkedIn post announcing his exit after 13 years, he wrote: “Back in 2013, I was given the opportunity by Michael Emenalo to help establish the club’s loan department from scratch, under the leadership of Eddie Newton and with the invaluable guidance and influence of Tim Harkness.
“What began as a small operation evolved into a progressive and fully integrated player development programme that became an important part of the club’s football structure. After 13 incredible years at Chelsea, the time is approaching for a new challenge.
“I leave incredibly proud of what was built, grateful for the relationships and experiences along the way, and excited for what comes next.”
Ed Brand (Loan Technical Coach, pictured) is the most high-profile name to go. He has an association with Chelsea stretching back 29 years, having first joined the Academy as a 10-year-old schoolboy at the old Heathrow training ground.
He signed officially at 10, progressed through the youth ranks as a defender, captained the youth team, played for the reserves and earned caps for England at U16 and U17 level.
Released at 18 after being told he “wasn’t good enough”, Brand played four years of college soccer in the United States (San Jose State University on a scholarship) before concussions ended his playing career around the age of 22.
In 2009, former Academy Director Neil Bath invited him back as a coach. Aside from a four-month spell as Jody Morris’s assistant at Swindon Town in early 2023, Brand had been on the Chelsea staff ever since — progressing from Youth Development Phase Coach to U18 and U19 Head Coach, U21 Assistant and, most recently, Loan Technical Coach since October 2024.
Brand was a key part of the golden era of Chelsea’s Academy under Bath, helping develop stars including Reece James, Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher, Marc Guéhi, Trevoh Chalobah, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.
As Morris’s assistant with the U18s, he contributed to back-to-back FA Youth Cup wins in 2017 and 2018 and a record-breaking side that also reached the UEFA Youth League final. As U18 Head Coach he won the U18 Premier League Cup and reached another Youth Cup final.
In his own LinkedIn post, Brand wrote: “My time at Chelsea will soon be coming to an end. After being associated with the club as a player and coach for 29 years, it’s a big moment in my life & career.
“So many moments & memories made, I’m left with an overriding feeling of pride that I participated in the career of so many top players & people. A special mention however, to three people: Neil Bath, Cyril Davies (long-standing Chelsea Academy coach) and Jody Morris.
“Three unbelievable people that helped me so much. I am now excited for what the future holds & looking forward to my next challenge.”
Luis Nedio (Loan & Mentor Technical Coach) is the most recent arrival but still part of the cut. The Portuguese coach joined Chelsea in November 2024 after an impressive CV that included first-team assistant roles at Shanghai SIPG, Fenerbahçe and Corinthians.
He was brought in specifically to strengthen mentoring and technical support for loanees, with a particular focus on Chelsea’s growing interest in the South American market. His role involved working closely with players on loan to monitor their progress, deliver technical guidance and support their development pathways.
Why now?
Chelsea told TGG: “Three redundancies were made from an individual department within the men’s first team as part of a strategic development. No-one involved worked for the Academy.”
The move reflects the new reality at Stamford Bridge. With fewer players being sent out on loan overall and greater emphasis on multi-club pathways (such as the partnership with Strasbourg), the club no longer needs the same depth of operational and mentoring resource that characterised the 2010s ‘loan army’.
What happens next?
The loan operation is run by former first-team goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini (Loan Player Manager), Josh Marsh (Loans and Pathways Manager, who joined in 2024 after 20 months as Head of Football Operations at Swansea City) and Ross Turnbull (Goalkeeper Loans).
TGG understands the club is not planning any further immediate redundancies in the loans area, but the department is operating in a more streamlined form than at any point in the last 12 years.
