Leigh Bromby has been appointed Talent Acquisition Lead at Derby County after a year as their Interim Recruitment Lead.

Bromby, the former Sporting Director of Huddersfield Town, will have two main strands to his role. The first will be working on the “final stages of identifying players who fit the strategy of both the Head Coach and the club.”

This will include negotiations to conclude transfers, including due diligence on players, working closely with Chief Executive Officer Stephen Pearce.

The second strand will be “pulling together coaching, performance and scouting strategies.” Bromby made individual development – incorporating physical, technical, tactical and psychological – a key element of his strategy at Huddersfield, where he spent nine years, as Academy Manager, Head of Football Operations and then Sporting Director.

At TGG’s Individual Development Webinar in 2021, Bromby and six of his staff outlined the club’s approach to individual development. The staff who presented, along with Bromby, were First Team Coach Danny Schofield, Head of Performance Analysis Craig Nosworthy, Head of Performance Paul Bower,  U17 Head Coach George Danaher, Head of Goalkeeping Paul Clements and Head of Recruitment Josh Marsh.

The approach paid dividends, with several players recruited for modest fees and then developed, including forward Sorba Thomas, who was signed from National League side Boreham Wood and went on to represent Wales. The team also reached the Championship play-off final in 2022, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.

Many of the staff were also developed, with Marsh, for example, going on to become Director of Football Operations at Swansea City. He is now Loans and Pathways Manager at Chelsea.

Derby said Bromby had already assisted in the implementation of the new performance and coaching team assembled “for the enhanced development plans of several First-Team players and Academy graduates, such as Owen Eames, Cruz Allen and Isaac Go.”

Meanwhile, Ben Jones has joined from the Football Association to become Talent Identification Lead. He will be “solely focused” on scouting for the Men’s First Team through to the Academy”, working closely with Bromby.

Jones has worked for the FA for the last three-and-a-half years, latterly as Talent ID Operations and Process Lead. Derby said his “core strengths and experience are aligned with the club’s approach of using both traditional scouting and data-driven models to identify potential players for the club.”

Prior to the FA, Jones was Lead Academy Recruitment Analyst for Chelsea and Performance Pathway Scientist for the England & Wales Cricket Board. Fabian Unwin joined Derby from Chelsea, where he was Senior Data Analyst, in December as Data and Analytics Lead.
