Brighton Under-18s Lead Iñigo Calderón has been appointed Head Coach of Bristol Rovers.

The 42-year-old played for six years in League One and the Championship for Brighton, before becoming a scout (2016 to 2019) and then U18s Lead (July 2023-) with the Seagulls.

He has also been U18s Head Coach and B Team Assistant with Alaves in his native Spain. At Bristol Rovers he replaces Matt Taylor, who was sacked earlier this month.

Director Of Football George Friend said: “I am delighted to welcome Iñigo to the club and have him on board as our new Head Coach. Iñigo is someone I have followed for a long time, both as a player and as a coach, and he already has a thorough understanding of English football and the culture of the game here.

“Iñigo is an excellent coach and what has become obviously clear from our conversations is that he is full of the character, ambition and enthusiasm to not only be the best head coach he can, but to help drive Bristol Rovers to success too.

“We are all excited for what Iñigo will bring to our squad, our staff, and our supporters.”

Calderón has signed a two-and-a-half year deal and will begin work with the squad at The Quarters Training Facility on Friday. Lee Cattermole, who had been appointed Set Piece Specialist on December 12th before taking interim charge of the side, has now been sacked.

David Horseman and Kevin Bond, who is returning to the club after assisting Joey Barton, will be Calderón’s assistants.
