Brighton have hired Mike Anthony from the New Zealand All Blacks to take on the new role of Head of Player Development and High Performance at the club.
Anthony has more than 25 years’ experience working across elite-level sport and has been with New Zealand Rugby for the last 14 in a range of senior performance roles. He is currently Head of High Performance and will join Brighton in February, pending a work permit.
His role is distinct to that of Head of Performance Gary Walker, who oversees a unified medical and performance department at the club.
Anthony will be “supporting the club’s long‑term commitment to building and sustaining elite performance within the men’s first-team environment.”
His remit will encompass “driving individual player development and enhancing an aligned high-performance culture across key departments.”
The New Zealander will report into Technical Director Mike Cave and also work closely with Sporting Director Jason Ayto and Head Coach Fabian Hurzeler.
Ayto said: “We’re delighted to welcome Mike to Brighton & Hove Albion. His track record within one of world sport’s most successful high‑performance systems speaks for itself.
“Mike has an exceptional ability to build environments where players, coaches and teams can thrive, and his expertise will strengthen every part of our performance structure. We’re excited for him to get started.”
Cave added: “Mike’s experience in developing players and high‑performing teams at the very top level is rare. He has spent decades shaping elite cultures and helping athletes maximise their potential.
“His arrival is another important step in our strategy to build sustainable success across the club. We’re very pleased to have him on board.”
Anthony’s role will be similar to that of Willie Isa at Chelsea. The former rugby league international is Chelsea’s Player Support and Development Officer, having joined shortly after retiring from playing with the Wigan Warriors.
Wigan Head Coach Matt Peet explained: “I don’t expect the supporters to ever physically see the impact he has at Chelsea. But he is a cultural architect. He will make the environment better and all the individuals around the environment better.”
